How to Reset a Tripped Circuit Breaker

Resetting a breaker is one electrical task homeowners can generally handle themselves.

Identify the tripped breaker. Look for a switch in the “off” position or sitting between the “on” and “off” positions. Some breakers have an indicator showing that they have tripped.
Turn it fully off. Push the breaker firmly into the full “off” position.
Turn it back on. Move the switch firmly to the "on" position. You should hear a click as it resets.
Check your power. If the breaker stays on, power should return to the affected circuit.

If the breaker immediately trips again or continues to trip repeatedly, stop resetting it and contact a professional electrician. The recurring problem may be caused by an overloaded circuit, short circuit, ground fault, or another electrical issue.
